South Africa Traveller Declaration · field guide · varies

The fields where people get the official Traveller Declaration wrong, in form order.

Twelve preparation items in four guide groups, not the total fields or steps of the official form. Questions depend on your journey and goods. Examples and red comparison cards are document checks, not promises that an entry will pass or be rejected. This page provides no local pre-check.

§ Fields, in order

Practical field checks

All sections 12 checks
Declaration and transport
01

Full or Nil / 申报类型

Compare the Full and Nil descriptions with what you carry. Nil is for no declarable goods; it does not let you skip filing. This example describes a situation, not text to paste.

02

Travel mode and port / 出行方式与口岸

Choose the actual travel mode and port. Prepare the corresponding flight, train, vessel or vehicle details. An air traveller checks the booking; a road traveller should not invent a flight number.

Identity
03

Travel document / 旅行证件

Prepare the document type, number and issuing country from your travel document, not an old application. This guide does not impose a passport-number length or require a South African ID from every foreign visitor.

04

Nationality / 国籍

Use the nationality in your travel document. Issuing country is a separate question. Do not substitute the country where you live merely because it appears in your address.

05

First name and surname / 名与姓

Prepare First Name and Surname as shown in your travel document. Check spelling, not a nickname. For a single name or characters the page cannot accept, ask SARS; those branches have not been verified for this guide.

06

Date of birth / 出生日期

Use your document's birth date. The current first screen shows CCYY/MM/DD, illustrated by 1991/08/22. Follow its date control; this example does not prove every accepted format. Do not enter your travel date here.

Contact and accommodation
07

Contact details / 联系方式

Prepare an accessible email and a mobile number if you have one. The rules allow a port email arranged by Customs in relevant cases; ask for help rather than inventing one. Occupation is supplied where applicable, not assumed mandatory for everyone.

08

Address for this journey / 本次住宿地址

For arrival, prepare your South African accommodation address. For departure, rule 15.04(a)(iv) asks for the address where you will stay in the destination country. Check street, city and postal details against the booking. A fixed screen heading does not remove this difference.

Journey, companions and goods
09

Travel capacity and purpose / 身份与目的

Indicate whether you travel personally or for an entity, then your actual purpose. A personal holiday is the example. Prepare entity details if you represent one; do not invent a company to complete a conditional section.

10

Itinerary and dates / 行程与日期

Prepare origin, destination, dates and transit points where applicable. Use the current booking, not a cancelled one; do not invent a transit country for a direct journey. Inbound connections use the final leg directly to South Africa for the 24-hour filing window.

11

Travelling companions / 同行人

If you have companions, prepare their names, document numbers and issuing countries. Each person needs declaration coverage, including children and infants. A parent or legal guardian may submit for a child; do not assume adding names completes every adult's declaration.

12

Goods and currency / 货物与货币

Answer according to what you carry. Where prompted, prepare descriptions, quantities or amounts, values, source and serial numbers. Nil is inappropriate for declarable items. Check current SARS currency rules; this guide does not combine different thresholds into one number.

§ After submit

What happens between hitting submit and getting through immigration.

  1. 01

    Confirmation screen

The official site shows a confirmation on screen. Screenshot it — that's your backup.

  2. 02

Read the confirmation and Customs instructions

SARS says it emails confirmation and instructions after submission. Read what applies at your port; no fixed delivery time is promised here.

  3. 03

    At immigration

Keep the SARS confirmation for Customs, not as an immigration permit. On arrival, clear immigration and then follow the confirmation to Customs. On departure, complete the instructed Customs matters before immigration.

  4. 04

Save the confirmation on your phone or print it

SARS allows a copy on your mobile device or a printout. Keep the confirmation available when Customs asks for it.

  5. 05

    Keep details current before Customs

If submitted details change, update the declaration before proceeding through the Customs processing channel. Follow the official system or ask SARS for help.

The cards above group 12 preparation items into four guide sections. They do not count all official questions or steps. Examples show what to check against your documents and circumstances, not an official acceptance or rejection test. No personal details were submitted for this guide.

1. Declaration and transport

Confirm whether you are entering or leaving South Africa and select your transport and port. Read the Full and Nil descriptions. No declarable goods means Nil when its conditions apply; it does not remove the filing requirement.

Prepare the flight, train, vessel or vehicle identifiers for your mode. Do not invent a flight number for a land journey.

2. Identity

Have your travel document ready: type, number, issuing country, nationality, name and birth date. Compare the details with the document you will present. Do not assume a South African ID number applies to every foreign visitor.

The current first screen shows a birth-date hint of CCYY/MM/DD. Use its date control and your real birth date. This hint is not proof of every accepted input format. Single names and special-character branches have not been verified for this guide; seek SARS guidance if needed.

3. Contact and accommodation

Prepare an accessible email. Provide your mobile details if you have a mobile phone. Where applicable, the rules permit a port email arranged by Customs; ask for assistance rather than making one up. Occupation is conditional on applicability.

For entry, use the address where you will stay in South Africa. For departure, rule 15.04(a)(iv) asks for your accommodation in the destination country. Check street, city and postal details against your booking; a fixed South African-address heading in a screen or guide does not override the direction-specific rule.

4. Journey, companions and goods

State your actual purpose and whether you travel personally or for an entity. Prepare entity details when that applies. Use current travel dates and include transit points only where relevant.

If you have companions, prepare their document details and make sure each traveller has declaration coverage. Children and infants also need coverage; a parent or legal guardian can submit for them. Do not assume the companion list alone completes every person’s declaration.

Answer the goods and currency questions truthfully. Supply item descriptions, amounts, values, sources or serial numbers when prompted. Check current official currency rules; this page does not present a single threshold covering every situation.

Submit within the correct window

Submit within 24 hours before departure. For an inbound connection, count from the last leg directly to South Africa. For departure, count from leaving South Africa. This is not an arrival-time window. Railway and non-designated-place procedures are addressed in the official FAQ.

Update changed details before proceeding through Customs. Electronic filing failures can receive assistance where available; paper forms are limited to the official exceptions, not an unrestricted alternative.

Save the confirmation for Customs

SARS says it emails confirmation and port instructions. Save the confirmation on your phone or print it. This guide has not tested a completed submission or email delivery.

On arrival, complete immigration first, then follow the confirmation to Customs. On departure, complete the instructed Customs matters before immigration. The SARS confirmation is for Customs and does not replace immigration permission.
