When to apply

Before departure; retain the TGD1 or registration record for identification on return. The current sources differ on whether registration of all such resident valuables is mandatory.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

South African residents leaving with identifiable valuable goods that they intend to bring back may register them with Customs before departure on a Traveller Goods Declaration (TGD1), retaining the record to prove re-importation. SARS's current departure page says travellers are required to declare valuable goods such as jewellery, watches, cameras, video cameras and laptops before leaving South Africa, and must include serial numbers for identification on re-import, whereas SC-PA-01-03 rev8 §3(a) says South African residents may elect to register their identifiable valuables with Customs prior to leaving on a TGD1. The exact mandatory extent is unresolved; this entry is limited to residents and returnable, identifiable goods and does not assert that every traveller must register every valuable item. Goods temporarily taken abroad for return must still be declared through SATMS before leaving, and Customs may record identifying features such as serial or registration numbers. On return, the retained TGD1 helps identify the same goods.
