When to apply

At entry or departure, as applicable.

Who it applies to

Legitimately acquired foreign exchange exceeding USD15,000 equivalent in aggregate must be declared when entering or departing Sri Lanka. Departing passengers must also declare foreign currency notes over USD10,000. Arriving passengers intending to take back foreign notes over USD10,000 must declare them on arrival. The customs page separately states an LKR20,000 local-currency carrying limit; this is not the foreign-exchange reporting threshold.

When to apply

On arrival, to the Customs Arrival No 1 Officer.

Who it applies to

The Sri Lanka Customs Travellers page instructs that foreign currencies, gold jewelleries, goods under FRIC or CARNET, and gems should be declared to the Customs Arrival No 1 Officer on arrival. The page lists these categories without any amount threshold; it does not state that any amount must be declared, and it does not supersede or restate the foreign-exchange amount thresholds kept in LK-customs-rules-reference (record verified 2026-09-12; not re-verified in the 2026-09-27 round).
