When to apply

At the moment of arrival in or departure from the Kingdom, at the border crossing; one declaration per crossing direction when the threshold is exceeded.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Under Article 23(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing Law No. (20) of 2021, any person entering or leaving the Kingdom must declare transported cash or bearer negotiable instruments (BNIs) to the Customs Department, on the form made for that purpose, when their value exceeds the threshold set by the National Committee. The Committee's Instructions for Declaring Cash and Cross-Border Bearer Negotiable Instruments for the Year 2021 (Article 3(a)) set that threshold at JOD 10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies, converted at Central Bank of Jordan rates. The threshold is strictly 'exceeds': exactly JOD 10,000 or less does not trigger the duty. The duty applies on both entry and exit. Customs may ask about the source and purpose of the cash (Article 23(b)), and seizes cash and BNIs that were not declared or were declared falsely (Article 24(a)). The law also covers cash sent by mail or cargo; this item covers what a traveller carries.
