When to apply

On request, when arriving in or leaving Jersey (any cash amount): disclose the amount truthfully to the officer. Voluntarily, before travel: travellers entering or leaving with more than 10,000 euros (or the equivalent in any other currency) may fill out the voluntary cash disclosure form in advance and send it to the Service before travelling.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Two distinct rules on the official Jersey Customs and Immigration Service page; neither is a mandatory pre-travel cash declaration. (1) Conditional duty to disclose when asked: when you arrive in or leave Jersey, you may be asked to reveal the amount of cash you are carrying to a Jersey Customs and Immigration Service officer; the page states this without any amount qualification, so it applies to cash of any amount; if you fail to disclose any cash you are carrying when asked to do so, or if you make a false disclosure, you could be fined up to £5,000 or imprisoned for up to two years, or both. Cash on this page includes travellers' cheques, cheques, promissory notes, money orders and coins. (2) Voluntary disclosure over €10,000: if you are entering or leaving Jersey with more than 10,000 euros (or the equivalent in any other currency) you can make a voluntary cash disclosure; the form can be filled out in advance and sent to the Service before you travel. The euro threshold is exclusive ('more than 10,000 euros') and the disclosure is optional — the page states no duty to declare cash proactively at any amount and sets no penalty for not making the voluntary disclosure; penalties attach only to non-disclosure or false disclosure when asked. Do not mix currencies: the disclosure threshold is EUR 10,000 while the penalty ceiling is GBP 5,000. Statute referenced by the page: Customs and Excise (Jersey) Law 1999 (linked to the Jersey Law website).
