When to apply

File electronically through the AADE application (digital path: Customs - e-Transactions - e-Customs - Liquid Assets Declaration); the application allows submission up to 15 days before travel; finalisation requires the traveller to appear before the customs authority, with verification of the travel document and counting/verification of the declared amount.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Applies only when entering or leaving the European Union through Greece; the AADE pages read do not extend this to travel between EU Member States. Any natural person carrying 'cash items' with a value equal to or greater than EUR 10,000.00 (threshold inclusive) must declare them to the competent (customs) authorities: cash in circulation (banknotes and coins), negotiable bearer instruments (e.g. cheques, promissory notes), coins containing at least 90% gold, and gold bars such as ingots, nuggets or lumps containing at least 99.5% gold. Under AADE Directive O. 3039/28-07-2025 (in force from 01/08/2025, 06:00), declarations of accompanied liquid assets of a value equal to or greater than EUR 10,000.00 must be submitted electronically through the AADE application at all border crossing points of the country; handwritten completion of the form is allowed only where the electronic application is unavailable. Non-compliance, or submission of an inaccurate or incomplete declaration, triggers an administrative fine equal to 25% of the undeclared amount (a Greek enforcement fine as stated on the AADE cash page and in the accompanied-cash FAQ).
