When to apply

On arrival in and departure from Greenland, at the control points of airports and harbours.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Landstingslov 18/1992 §30(1) and (3) require persons travelling to or from Greenland to stop unprompted for control and to declare all goods carried, give information, show baggage and unpack when asked; the later 38/2015 and 64/2023 amendments rewrote §30(4) and added §35a without altering these duties. Self-Government order 48/2024 (in force 27 Nov 2024, replacing 6/2023) §1 defines entry as personal entry into the duty area on arrival from abroad, including Denmark and the Faroe Islands. Duty-free quantities at entry: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 100 cigarillos or 250 g smoking tobacco or snuff/pipe tobacco; 200 cigarette papers or holders; 1 litre spirits over 22% vol or 2.25 litres fortified wine of 15–22% vol; 2.25 litres wine under 15% vol; 2 litres beer; 2 litres carbonated or caffeine-containing drinks with 150 mg caffeine per litre or more; 1 litre drinking water; 4 kg in total of chocolate and sweets; 5 kg in total of lamb and mutton. Duty-free tobacco, spirits, wine and beer may only be imported by persons who have turned 18 (fyldt 18 år); quantities beyond the allowances are dutiable, and under 48/2024 §7 the goods must be carried on the person or in personal baggage so they can be presented to the Tax Administration. The Tax Authority performs entry controls of goods at Kangerlussuaq, Narsarsuaq and Kulusuk. The 48/2024 §1(2) list is closed and contains no perfume/cosmetics allowance; older unofficial English pages listing such quotas are superseded and kept as background only, not as procedure support.

When to apply

On entering or leaving the duty area (the Greenland customs territory).

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Inatsisartutlov 38/2015, in force 1 January 2016 and marked Gældende, rewrote §30(4) of 18/1992: persons entering or leaving the duty area who carry money/liquid assets strictly exceeding the equivalent of DKK 50,000 must stop unprompted for control and declare all carried liquid assets to the Tax Administration; exactly DKK 50,000 does not trigger the duty and the declaration covers the entire amount, not only the excess. A 2025 bill proposing to lower the threshold to DKK 15,000 was withdrawn by Naalakkersuisut per the Inatsisartut agenda statement of 15 April 2026, so the current threshold remains DKK 50,000. Under 64/2023 §46(5) the Tax Administration may detain liquid assets over DKK 50,000 found during §30 control where criminal origin or use is suspected; this is an enforcement power, not the traveller's submission duty.

When to apply

On arrival at Nuuk airport, completed before leaving the control area; mechanism effective 1 November 2025.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Inatsisartutlov 64/2023 §35a, brought into force by Self-Government order 69/2025 solely for Nuuk airport from 1 November 2025: on entry by air, passengers may choose voluntary customs clearance of carried dutiable goods for private use, paying import duty plus a fixed handling fee of DKK 100 (within the statutory cap of DKK 1,000). Only natural persons aged 18 or older may choose it; quantities of the dutiable categories may not exceed 5 times the duty-free quantities for entry, and any excess is confiscated. Goods must be carried on the person or in personal baggage so they can be presented to the Tax Administration. Import duty and fee must be paid before the passenger leaves the control area, otherwise the goods are confiscated. No voluntary-clearance order is in force for other airports or ports.
