When to apply

On entering or leaving Czechia at the border, using the joint EU declaration form ("Ohlášení peněžní hotovosti"), available on the customs website and at any customs office; at international airports the forms are placed before the customs area in the departures zone and before the red exit marked "Zboží k proclení" in the arrivals zone. Filing in person, by data box or via the cPortál system is valid; the customs office stamps a copy on request. The 12-month aggregate duty arises when the person knows the EUR 10,000 threshold will be reached.

Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)

Travellers entering Czechia from outside the EU or leaving Czechia for outside the EU must declare in writing to customs cash carried on the person, in luggage or in the vehicle with a total value of at least EUR 10,000 (AML Act No. 253/2008 Sb. § 41; Regulation (EU) 2018/1672). Cash covers banknotes and coins, bearer-negotiable instruments (cheques, travellers' cheques, promissory notes, money orders), highly liquid commodities (gold coins at least 90 % gold, bullion at least 99.5 %) and unnamed prepaid cards. The duty also applies once cash imported, exported or sent in shipments within any 12 consecutive months cumulatively reaches EUR 10,000. Carrying at least EUR 15,000 within Czechia (including intra-EU travel) creates only an information duty upon a customs request during checks (§ 41a), not a second advance declaration. Breach is an offence with a fine up to CZK 10,000,000 (on-the-spot fine up to CZK 10,000) and the cash may be seized.
