On entering AND leaving BiH, at every border crossing / at all international border crossings, whenever the value of cash or securities carried is strictly more than EUR 10,000: obtain the currency declaration form from the customs officer (or download it), complete it per the instructions on its back, and hand it to the customs officer; a certified copy is returned on request. Carrying more than EUR 10,000 additionally requires, per the entity-level instruction, demonstrating an approval of the RS or FBiH Ministry of Finance.
Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)
Direction: both bringing into and taking out of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the duty applies at every border crossing in BiH. Per the UIO 'Information for citizens and travelers' page captured live on 2026-09-27. Trigger (strict threshold): all travellers bringing in or taking out cash or securities 'in the amount valued more than 10,000 euros' — strictly more than EUR 10,000, not EUR 10,000 or more — shall declare it to the customs authority on every border crossing in BiH; the page notes the limit was 'increased … to 10 000 euros' for FATF-harmonization purposes. Instruments in scope (per the same page): in addition to effective foreign money, also convertible marks and cheques, securities and any other physically portable instruments of payment under the regulations governing prevention of money laundering and financing of terrorist activities. Traveller act (a genuine traveller-submitted declaration): the bringing in and taking out of cash, cheques or securities is declared on a currency declaration form which can be obtained from customs officers on all international border crossings, or downloaded from www.uino.gov.ba; a detailed instruction on completing the form is given on its back; after completing it, the form is handed to a customs officer, who shall, upon the request of the traveller, return a certified copy to the traveller who declared the cash, cheques or other securities. Entity-level regimes, recorded separately and NOT merged into one national rule: the Government of the Republic of Srpska adopted the Decree on amendments to the Decree on bringing in and taking out effective foreign money, convertible marks, cheques and securities ('Official Gazette of the Republic of Srpska', 46/17), in force 24 May 2017, with its form published by the RS Ministry of Finance (vladars.net); the Government of the Federation of BiH adopted the Decision on amendments to the Decision on taking out foreign cash and cheques ('Official Gazette of the Federation of BiH', 38/17), in force 25 May 2017, with its form published by the FBiH Government (fbihvlada.gov.ba) and the FBiH Ministry of Finance (fmf.gov.ba). Per the UIO instruction for form completion: in passenger traffic with foreign countries natural persons may transport more than 10,000 euros in cash provided that they demonstrate an approval by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Srpska OR the Ministry of Finance of the Federation of BiH — two distinct entity approval tracks alongside the state-level declaration duty; the page does not state which entity's approval applies to a given traveller (flagged as unresolved, not merged). Other sections of the same UIO page (pets, plants, medications, animal products, unreconciled baggage, postal consignments, vehicle imports) are separate regimes outside this procedure.
