Who it applies to, exceptions and limits (full text)
Direction: travellers entering Austria from a non-EU (third) country. The figures below are the general travellers' duty-free amounts; the reduced cross-border-traffic amounts (including the Samnaun Valley tobacco amounts for travellers domiciled in Austria) are special regimes listed separately at the end and must not be read as the general values. Goods intended for your own personal use or for persons living in the same household can be brought into Austria without paying charges. When going through customs control you must declare the following goods — in other words you must submit a customs declaration for: goods not intended for your personal use; goods obtained outside the EU which exceed the duty-free amounts for tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and medicinal products or the duty-free allowance for other goods; and goods that are subject to prohibitions or restrictions on imports. Duty-free when imported in your personal luggage for your own personal use or as a gift, traveller aged 17 or older: tobacco — 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 grams of smoking tobacco or a proportional combination of these goods (for the product category 'Tobacco for heating'/tobacco sticks the duty-free limits of the 'Other goods' section apply); alcoholic beverages — 1 litre of alcohol, distilled beverages and spirits with an alcohol content exceeding 22% vol. (including undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% vol. and over), or 2 litres of alcohol and alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content not exceeding 22% vol., or a proportional combination of these goods, and in addition 4 litres of non-sparkling wines as well as 16 litres of beer; medicine — amounts consistent with your personal needs during the trip (without authorisation, travellers resident in the EU may import medication they already carried with them on departure; import of medication bought abroad is only permitted up to three retailer packages per person); other goods — with a cumulative value of EUR 430 for airline travellers or EUR 300 for all other travellers per calendar day, provided it is a non-commercial import; for travellers younger than 15 years those amounts are generally reduced to EUR 150. Within those amounts the product group 'Tobacco for heating' may not contain more than 800 tobacco sticks or, in other presentation, 250 grams of tobacco; when exceeding these indicative levels you must demonstrate that the goods really are for your personal use. Several travellers are not allowed to pool their allowances, and the duty-free allowance may be claimed once per calendar day. When travelling via another EU member state, that member state's individual regulations must be considered. Import prohibitions and restrictions also apply to the duty-free goods listed above. Special regime — reduced duty-free amounts in cross-border traffic: tobacco (17+) 25 cigarettes or 10 cigarillos or 5 cigars or 25 grams of smoking tobacco or a proportional combination; alcohol (17+) 0.25 litres exceeding 22% vol. or 0.75 litres not exceeding 22% vol. or a proportional combination; 1 litre non-sparkling wine (17+); 2 litres beer (17+); other goods up to a cumulative value of EUR 40 (non-commercial); the 'small' cross-border traffic agreement covers persons residing at the border of Austria's neighbouring countries Switzerland and Liechtenstein, with further food-related exemptions. Special regime — Samnaun Valley: for travellers domiciled in Austria entering from the Swiss customs exclave Samnaun Valley, reduced tobacco amounts apply (17+): 40 cigarettes or 20 cigarillos or 10 cigars or 50 grams of smoking tobacco or a proportional combination; other goods remain duty-free at the general cumulative values (EUR 430 airline / EUR 300 other travellers per calendar day, EUR 150 for travellers under 15); entries with tobacco products obtained in Samnaun Valley via the customs offices of Pfunds, Spiss or Martinsbruck are regarded as direct imports.
